in east riverdale. we're at the scene. debora, what can you tell us so far? >> reporter: well, anita, i can tell you that what started out at 7:30 tonight as a sheriff's deputy trying to serve a protective order at this house behind me ended up, neighbors say, with a mom watching her son die. listen to how this all went down. >> a deputy sheriff with the prince george's county office respond to 6312 63rd to serve a protective order. >> reporter: that man was identified only as frank. they say frank's mom opened the door. >> while he was in the home, a male subject appeared from the rear of the house displaying a firearm. >> reporter: that's when captain nancy rigly says the deputy sheriff shot the 39-year-old man. >> i hear the ambulance. >> reporter: frank died at the hospital. >> he was a problem with police before. >> reporter: the deputy sheriff wasn't hurt. he's now on tryempora administrative duty. >> he's a tenured law enforcement officer. >> reporter: prince george's county sheriff's office says they're not going to confirm the person's name. they're not going to give out the na

to general allen. and tonight bob orr picks up the story for us from there. bob? >> reporter: good evening, scott, well, the announcement came in the middle of the night on board an airplane carrying secretary of defense leon panetta to australia. pentagon spokesman george little told reporters secretary panetta asked the white house to postpone general allen's appointment as supreme allied commander in europe. >> on sunday the federal bureau of investigation referred to the department of defense a matter involving general john allen, commander of the international security assistance force, or i.s.a.f., in afghanistan. >> reporter: the matter involves 20,000 to 30,000 pages of information the f.b.i. delivered sunday to the pentagon's inspector general. one senior official says the documents include a couple of hundred e-mails between general allen and jill kelley, the same tampa socialite who triggered the petraeus scandal. the e-mails discovered in kelley's files date back to 2010 when allen served as deputy commander for u.s. central command in tampa. pentagon and f.b.i. sources have ch

't on land. it's also on the water. the d.c. fire department boat rescue fleet just isn't what it used to be. this is the john glenn. it is the biggest boat in that fleet. the department still uses it to patrol but given all the potential threats to homeland security, there are questions about just how effective this boat could be. that's because it's out there on the water but the communication system is broken. the radio can't transmit a distress call. also the coast guard documentation has expired. >> part of the communication system doesn't work. it appears the certification for the boat that should have been applied for back in august, the date was missed. >> reporter: so the question now whether to apply for grants to repair the boat. those repairs will cost about $700,000. the other option is to lobby capitol hill and to see if they can get some money to buy a new state of the art boat. there are a couple of options. we have to figure out and wait to see what comes of this. as you mentioned earlier, there are potential discussions of cutting the number of medics during the overnight h
